It was an accident in the most literal sense.

He meant it to be a quick trip, a short drive to a local beach to celebrate. Jun is reluctant, but wasn't he always? Sure, they've been smoking, and sure they've had a couple drinks, but Zack is the best driver out of the group and they've done this a million times without ever so much as a speeding ticket, and--

"What's the big deal, Jun?"

And so Jun gets in the car, and smiles when Sunny grins at him even though he doesn't look like he's having fun.

"I thought you said it was just going to be the two of us?"

"It will be, I promise. They're just giving us a ride" and why does Jun care anyway? It's not as if they're a couple, although Sunny has tried several times to be just that, and each time Jun has—

"Watch it!"

The driver swerves back into his lane and everyone lets out a relieved breath.

Someone must have made a comment at Jun's expense, because now Jun is scowling and he turns to Sunny and—

"You promised you wouldn't do this anymore."

—and Sunny's not quite sure which 'this' Jun is talking about, because he's been doing a lot of things lately that he probably shouldn't. He doesn't answer, and Jun doesn't say anything else.

"We're just having fun," Sunny says. And he is. Because maybe his grades aren't that good, and maybe his parents have all but given up on him, and maybe his life is edging towards outofcontrol , but right now he's high and a little drunk and life is good. The lights from passing cars flicker across his vision and he imagines them dancing and turning and flying by and—

It's not until he hears Jun yell once more that he forces himself to focus, and maybe he's a little drunker than he thought because time is moving too slow as they speed towards the light.

And that's all there is now. Light and screaming and light Light! LightlightlightCOLLISION.

Silence.

Pain.

He opens his eyes, but the light is gone now and all that's left is darkness and pain and blood and bones in places they shouldn't be.

He doesn't see Jun anywhere and everyone everything is silent. He tries to talk and all he can manage to do is spit globs of blood onto the asphalt.

He sees the light light light flashinglight of police cars and ambulances and someone is kneeling next to him—

"Son, can you hear me?"

His answer sounds like blood hitting pavement and the EMT shakes his head sadly.

Jun's nowhere to be found and everything is silent except for the sirens and the lights and the man leaning down and—

"Looks like this one didn't make it. What's the time?"

"Eleven thirty."

At first Sunny thinks they're talking about him, and he opens his mouth to tell them otherwise, but right now his mouth is full of blood and teeth and gravel and he turns his head to the side and—

A body.

A body with Jun's face and Jun's hair and it's not Jun because it can't be Jun because this was meant to be a quick trip to the beach to celebrate and Sunny promised and pleasegod don't let it be Jun!

The body with Jun's face doesn't move and doesn't speak and the eyes remained closed even as he's being lifted onto a stretcher. Sunny doesn't want to look because the person's face looks so much like Jun's and this was never supposed to happen.

"Stay with me, Son."

Sunny doesn't want to listen, doesn't want to look at anything other than the face of his friend and "You promised you wouldn't do this anymore".

Sunny doesn't care that his mouth is full of blood again or that he has bones protruding from torn skin or that his vision is fading out and "You promised you wouldn't do this anymore".

He's in an ambulance and with every turn he can feel his body break and—

"You promised you wouldn't do this.".

--and Jun isn't here. He calls out but the oxygen mask stifles his words. The men above him are working to put him back together again and Jun isn't here and it's his fault and why did it have to be Jun!

It's a small miracle when his ability to see finally leaves him, because with it goes the pain and the lights and the silence and—

It was only an accident.
Another short piece from Sinking Eden, written a little differently than my usual style. Not sure how I feel about this.

Basic explanation;

When Sunny was younger, his friend Jun died in a car accident that he was partially responsible for. Jun didn't like the fact that Sunny did drugs, and Sunny repeatedly promised to quit.

Jun was Sunny's best, and arguably only, true friend. He never forgave himself for what happened.
